Cultural Itinerary Marsala Mazara del Vallo - 09-09-2016

Marsala

Marsala is the largest city in Trapani province and offers several outstanding spots to the visitor. Among these, we of course must mention its incredible history, the Marsala wine story and economy and we can't forget that Garibaldi started Italy unification from Marsala in 1860.

Mazara del Vallo

Visiting Mazara del Vallo let you feel an arabic soul which is all over the place. The Arabs conquered the Island of Sicily in 827, starting right here and the city continues today to be socially and culturally a multiethnical centre. Mazara houses one of the most important bronze statue we ever found, called the Dancing Satyr.

Back to the temples time - 10-09-2016

Cusa quarries

It seems that the workers have just left the unfinished work. The "Cave di Cusa" quarry is surprising indeed and must be seen along with the archeological Park where the most recent temples were being built in 409 BC when Carthaginians destroyed Selinunte greek city. The site is situated 13 km away from the Park.

Archeological Park of Selinunte

Selinunte is considered as a one-in-a-kind ancient city because it had many temples built by Greeks, two large harbors and an tremendous fortification system all around protecting it from enemies. The Park of Selinunte can be all visited on foot and gives the opportunity to admire an emblematic ancient urban plan, developed around the Acropolis.

Belice Valley 1968 earthquake

Salemi

The city of Salemi was partially destroyed by the earthquake that hit western Sicily in 1968. The remains of the Mother Church are still standing today in the heart of Salemi. Near the main square, you can visit the interesting Museum of Mafia.

Poggioreale

After the earthquake of 1968, Poggioreale remained "untouched" and offers to today's visitor the unique scenery of a perfect ghost city. Everything reminds about the '60s in the streets, the balconies, the churches and the urban architecture in general.

Gibellina

There will be two "Gibellinas" for ever. One is conserved under the concrete as the "Cretto di Burri", this is the ancient beautiful Gibellina town we don't want to forget. The other one is all new, Gibellina Nuova and was built away from the original site in a modern and contemporary way.
